stock up on joy

21 11 2008

Last Friday I saw the new Bond movie.  I really like the blonde Bond and am a big fan of Casino Royal. (Quantom of Solace was satisfying, although not as good as the previous installment.)  Friday is my day off, so I went to an afternoon showing of the movie and got there a bit early.  Slick advertising has replaced the campy trivia and simple advertising prior to the movie.  C’mon!  Give me silly trivia about Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks, and Tom Jones!  Now, they advertise for TV shows, soda, fast food, and have also been playing music videos that uphold military service.  (Oh Kid Rock.  ”Warrior” is a terrible song.  Please find another way to support the troops.  The glorification of war in the video was, well, terrible.  Give me my glorified violence in Bond form, please.)

I honestly forget who was advertising with the “stock up on joy” slogan, but it’s a box store/mega-store of some kind, I am sure.  The music and the images mingled together so well with the “main character’s” interaction with a houseful of friends, I thought maybe it was an advertisement for being kind, cultivating healthy relationships or working toward world peace.   It was a slick slight of hand as they promoted shopping amidst all the people that make you feel good.

I hardly ever shop at the same time as the people who make me feel good.  Trust me.

Stock up on joy?  I have further thoughts about the concept of joy, spiritual joy, (Bond, James Bond) but that is for another post. This post is now about the Joy I love to have in my life.  Meet my friend Joy, Nina Joy.  I dare you not to feel joy as you hear her laugh!

Stock up on joy indeed.
